2007 Grant Recipients
Since 1995, the Northeastern New York (NENY) Komen Affiliate has granted more than $1.5 million to local organizations in upstate New York. This year’s grants, totaling more than $267,000 were awarded to fourteen organizations that are working locally to reach the needs of those impacted by breast cancer. Seventy-five percent of the net income raised by the NENY Affiliate through the Race for the Cure and other activities held throughout the year stays in the community to fund these programs in our 11-county service area. The remaining 25% of funds go to the Komen for the Cure Award and Research Grant programs supporting research, awards, and educational and scientific programs around the world.
Albany County
Albany Medical Center - $25,000
Breast Health Navigator Program
Through this initiative, information and education about breast cancer, risk factors, prevention and screening tools are provided for underserved patient populations, as well as women from underserved neighborhoods in the Albany area, including those seeking care at the Equinox Shelter and the Unity House.
St. Peter's Hospital - 6,900
Lymphedema Management Program
Breast cancer survivors are particularly prone to lymphedema as a result of surgery, lymph node dissection, or radiation treatments. With this grant, women will have access to the latest information, therapies, and tools provided by experienced and educated physical therapy staff at the Hospital. Breast cancer survivors ill learn long-term management strategies that will reduce swelling, increase range of motion and contribute to a better quality of life.
Gilda’s Club Capital Region - $22,500
Breast Cancer, Nutrition and Exercise
This program is designed to create awareness and education community members of the linkages between breast cancer, nutrition and exercise. The project is designed to reach healthy women, women currently living with breast cancer and breast cancer survivors and will reach women from different socio-economic, cultural, ethnic, national and religious backgrounds.
Camp Bravehearts, Inc. - $25,000
Oncology Camps for Women
The goal of the program is to enable women dealing with cancer the opportunity to share life experiences. Through exercise, crafts, wellness, outdoor challenge, educational and social activities, breast cancer survivors have an opportunity to learn new skills, increase self esteem and help address the risks and fears that many women face during and after treatment. Programs are offered at minimal cost and scholarships are available.
Capital Region Action Against Breast Cancer! - $15,000
Timely Information, Practical Services
This program offers a continuum of education and support, from risk reduction and primary prevention education, to direct services for newly diagnosed survivors, to their post-treatment care. Included are healthy lifestyles workshops for teens, college students and underserved populations in rural and urban communities that will provide education about screening, diet, exercise, environmental exposures, lifestyle choices and other breast cancer risk factors.
Clinton County
Community Link Mobile Health - $25,000
Women’s Health Screening
Community Link operates a mobile clinic that provides breast screening to rural areas of Clinton, Essex and Franklin Counties. These counties contain large areas and distances to health providers providing basic services. The mobile clinic will go to designated areas in these rural counties to offer breast screening and education, in the form of a health fair or during regular clinic visits. The target population is women with no insurance and/or low income.
CVPH /Fitzpatrick Cancer Center - $18,000
Doorways To Healing
Through this funding, unique weekend workshop programs are provided for breast cancer survivors. These intense, healing weekends consist of multiple strategies including small and large group activities, writing, music, movies and special healing ceremonies at the conclusion of the weekend. There is no charge to participants.
Hamilton County
Adirondack Healing Retreat - $ 8,400
Adirondack Healing Retreat at Sagamore
The Retreat offers rural women living with breast cancer from the North Country region of New York, a safe environment where they can meet each other, develop a support network, share experiences, learn tools for expression and learn how to use the arts, nature and movement to enhance their quality of life.
Schenectady County
Sunnyview Rehabilitation Hospital - $17,400
Lymphedema - Early Detection and Treatment
Sunnyview Hospital plans to address the many issues facing women with lymphedema by developing a program using technology that can detect lymphedema before clinical signs are present. The program is also seeking funding for compression bandages, supplies, and garments that are not typically covered by insurance companies, but are necessary for the appropriate treatment of lymphedema.
YWCA of Schenectady - $25,000
Take Charge of Your Health
This outreach program will target medically underserved women residing in Schenectday County by providing educational group sessions or individual session on the need for early detection of breast cancer. Target groups will include: African-American, Hispanic, Guyanese and Islamic women.
Montgomery County
St. Mary’s Hospital Center for Complementary Therapies - $17,000
Healing Touch Buddies
Funding is provided for this volunteer program in Montgomery and surrounding counties which provides Healing Touch treatments to breast cancer survivors, monthly, at the Hospital. Healing Touch is a gentle, non-invasive complementary therapy with the beneficial effects of pain reduction, relaxation and stress reduction.
Amsterdam Memorial Foundation - $12,000
Zonta Mammography Program
Since the inception of this program, over 600 mammographies have been provided to uninsured and underinsured women. The program also provides follow-up breast care and education to women in Montgomery County.
Rensselaer County
Samaritan Hospital - $25,000
Every Woman Counts
This is an education and outreach program designed to give medically underserved women the skills they need and the health care they deserve. The project is designed to reach medically underserved communities and to provide women from these neighborhoods with breast cancer education, breast cancer screening and, when necessary, breast cancer treatment.
Warren County
Glens Falls Hospital - $25,000
Regional Breast Care Initiative
This initiative is designed to accomplish two goals: to expand breast cancer education and awareness information available to the women of Warren, Washington, Hamilton, northern Saratoga and Essex County with the goal to increase the number of women who participate in breast cancer screening with exams and mammograms and to develop a system to increase the number of women who return for mammograms on an annual basis by dispelling myths and providing reminders via mail and phone.
